The file header can still do something captions do not: drop a precise coordinate, altitude, and sometimes a compass direction on the exact pixel you shared. That pin might be the summit you are proud of. It might also be the unmarked pull-out where you left the car, the social trail you should not advertise, or the backyard where you dumped gear after the hike. Location services on a phone do not know which of those you meant to publish.

This is a location-first page: the scene is outdoor recreation. Device serials and camera models still matter, so a full wipe is the default, but the reason people look this up is the pin. Drone stills from the same outing are a sibling problem — they often geotag even more aggressively.
What location data to strip — and why
- Latitude and longitude. The main leak. A waterfall photo with GPS is a machine-readable trailhead for anyone who saves the file.
- Altitude. Helps confirm a peak or a ridge when coordinates are slightly off. Still location data.
- GPSImgDirection / compass. Can point at a campsite, a cabin, or a parking cluster.
- Timestamps next to GPS. A Saturday 6:04 a.m. pin at a trailhead parking lot, posted Sunday, still tells a pattern about when that lot is empty.
If the picture itself contains a readable trail kiosk map or a license plate in the lot, that is in the pixels. Crop those. Then strip the header so the remaining landscape is not secretly a GPX point.
How to use MetadataWipe
- 1. Save the trail JPEG you intend to post (from the camera roll or an editor export).
- 2. Load it in MetadataWipe locally and look for GPS fields in the metadata panel.
- 3. Run a full metadata removal so coordinates are not copied into the new file.
- 4. Download the cleaned copy and verify GPS reads empty if you re-open it in the tool or in Properties / Get Info.

Realistic scenarios
Scenario A — Summit panorama: A hiker wipes GPS so the file cannot be reverse-geocoded to an unmarked social trail the caption left vague on purpose.
Scenario B — Parking-lot selfie: The pretty light is in the lot. They strip coordinates so the JPEG does not publish where they leave the car every Saturday.
Scenario C — Fragile cryptogamic soil area: A photographer posts a wide landscape without naming the slot canyon, and wipes GPS so the file cannot finish the map.
Scenario D — After-hike gear dump: A photo of muddy boots on a porch. The hike was public; the porch pin is not. They strip location before posting.
Phones, drones, and 'I already tagged the caption'
A caption that says 'Rockies' is not the same as a coordinate. People who save the image can read EXIF even when the social app's on-screen map is off.

Turning off geotagging in the camera going forward is good. It does not clean last weekend's roll. Wipe what you are about to post.
Common mistakes
Wiping only the hero summit and posting the parking-lot burst untouched. The burst is often the precise pin. Clean every frame you publish.
Assuming Instagram or a club forum strips GPS. Pipelines change. The file you control is the one you wiped.
Using 'remove location when sharing' and then emailing the original to yourself to post from a laptop. The original still has GPS. Wipe the file that will actually be attached.
Hiding GPS but leaving a live map screenshot in the same carousel. A screenshot of Google Maps is a pin in pixels. Do not post it if the point was privacy.
Summit pride is a caption; the unmarked pull-out is a geotag
Trail photos are allowed to name a wilderness, a peak, a waterfall. That is different from publishing the exact coordinate of a social trail, a nesting closure, a car left at an unsigned lot, or the kitchen where you dumped packs after the hike. Phones, action cams, and some drones write latitude, longitude, altitude, and sometimes direction into stills. Club Facebook groups, AllTrails-style feeds, and Instagram grids save originals. A caption that says “somewhere in the Whites” plus a GPS pin is a contradiction the file will not honor.

Wiping a trip still before a club or social post
Pick the JPEG you actually intend to show. Load it in the tool.
- Check for GPS and altitude. If they are present, a crop of the skyline will not remove them.
- Wipe and download the export.
- Post that export only. Repeat for the car, the dog, the diner, and the “home again” kitchen shot in the same album.
- If you also publish a GPX track on purpose, that is a visible choice. Do not let a JPEG silently duplicate a more precise pin than the track.
Drones can geotag stills more tightly than a phone. Export JPEG from the drone app, then wipe; do not assume the app’s share button emptied tags.
Albums that include the parking bump and the kitchen after
A hiker posts a ridge panorama and, in the same carousel, a selfie in the gravel lot. The panorama might be an official overlook. The lot shot geotags where they leave the car every Saturday. Wiping both stills — especially the lot — keeps the view without publishing a routine.
A trail runner photographs a fragile alpine plant “to ID later” and then posts the ID. The plant is rare. The JPEG has a tight pin. Naturalist groups do not need that precision in a downloadable file. Wipe, describe the region in words, and skip the exact meter mark.
Someone finishes a loop, photographs gear on the living-room floor, and posts a dump-out shot for a gear chat. The trail was public. The living room is not. Wipe the indoor still; it is still a location file.
Hiking-post mistakes that name the peak and geotag the driveway
Pride wants a place-name. Headers want a WGS-84 pair. Separate them on purpose.
- Believing a caption without coordinates means the file has none. Inspect, then wipe.
- Posting a drone JPEG straight from the controller share sheet. Wipe after export.
- Stripping the hero and leaving a tagged GoPro still of the same saddle. Every camera in the pack writes tags.
- Publishing a “blurred map screenshot” as a joke overlay while the underlying photo still has GPS. Wipe the photo; the overlay is decoration.
