About Strip Metadata From Drone Photos
Consumer drones from DJI and similar brands often write GPS latitude and longitude into every still. Aerial EXIF: GPS, altitude, gimbal, and aircraft tags
Consumer drone stills are mapping files wearing a JPEG costume. Autopilot firmware commonly writes GPSLatitude, GPSLongitude, GPSAltitude, and sometimes a home-point or takeoff coordinate. Gimbal pitch, yaw, and roll describe where the camera pointed. Aircraft make/model, flight-app software, and serial-adjacent fields identify the platform. That packet is gold for photogrammetry. It is a liability when the same still becomes a listing photo, a social landscape, or a client teaser of a private site. Stripping metadata from a drone photo means dropping those EXIF/XMP packets from the public JPEG (or PNG) while you keep a tagged archive for mapping if you still need it.

Property edges matter. An altitude tag plus a rooftop still can be enough to place a house even if you cropped the street sign out of the pixels. Real-estate and industrial clients may want geotags internally and may forbid them on MLS or press copies. Keep two trees: mapping originals, cleaned deliverables.
How to strip drone JPEG tags on MetadataWipe
Work from the still you will publish, not from a preview inside the flight log viewer that will re-export with “include metadata” checked.
- Export JPEG (or PNG) from the drone app or a DNG convert. Leave RAW/DNG in the archive folder.
- Open the MetadataWipe homepage and load the still. Confirm GPS, altitude, gimbal, and aircraft fields in the check panel so you know the file is a drone export, not an already-stripped copy.
- Clean in the tab. Download the
-metadatawipederivative. - Re-open the derivative. Latitude/longitude and altitude should not remain. If they do, you still have the flight-app original selected.
- Hand clients or social the derivative. Store tagged mapping files in a folder that is not the Dropbox you share with the listing agent.
Batch flights mean many stills. Process each public JPEG. One tagged hero image in a zip restores the home coordinate for anyone who inspects that file. There is no account and no remote rendering farm; volume is limited by you clicking through files, which is acceptable for a listing set and tedious for a thousand-frame map—use mapping software’s own privacy export for huge cartographic jobs, and this tool for the handful of stills that will be public.
Flights whose stills should not publish a home coordinate
A private-home listing. Aerials sell the property. They also pinpoint the backyard. MLS and social copies should not embed the takeoff GPS. Clean each marketing JPEG. Keep geotagged files for the broker’s internal map if the client wants them.
Landscape or art posts near where you live. A ridge photo at dawn with EXIF pointing at your driveway is a travel diary you did not mean to publish. Strip location and aircraft tags before Instagram or a portfolio host; do not assume the host will discard altitude.
An industrial or infrastructure client teaser. Facilities teams often forbid geotags on public stills. Deliver cleaned JPEGs. If they also need a KMZ internally, that is a separate, access-controlled package—not the same zip as the press kit.
Drone-export mistakes that keep a coordinate alive
Cleaning JPEG while emailing the DNG “for quality.” DNG still has GPS. Send RAW only on a private channel when the recipient needs it; otherwise send the inspected JPEG.
Including DJI preview files or .osmo companions in the same folder drop. Sidecars can restamp location. Zip only the cleaned stills you verified.
Re-exporting from the flight app after the wipe, with metadata inclusion on. You overwrote the public copy with a tagged one. Wipe the new export again or copy from the MetadataWipe download you already checked.
Video frame grabs saved by a player that copies the movie’s XMP. A still pulled from an MP4 may inherit location. Treat that grab as a new image and run it through MetadataWipe before it joins the listing set.
