What is actually happening

When you tap Post, you are usually not hosting your original bytes for the world to download unchanged. The platform accepts an upload, runs it through an image pipeline (resize, compress, sometimes format conversion), stores derivatives on a CDN, and serves those derivatives in the feed. EXIF, XMP, and ICC handling is part of that pipeline. Many consumer networks strip GPS and camera EXIF from what other users can retrieve, both for privacy expectations and because the tags are irrelevant to display once pixels are recompressed.

“Strip automatically” is still a fuzzy phrase.
