What Metadata Does a Screenshot Contain?
Screenshots are not camera photos, and their metadata story is different. You usually will not find the rich EXIF block a phone writes at shutter time — no lens, no aperture, often no GPS from the camera pipeline. That does not mean a screenshot is a bare grid of pixels. Capture tools, operating systems, and markup apps can still attach timestamps, software identifiers, color profiles, and other descriptive fields that travel with the file when you share it.

A camera JPEG is produced by an imaging pipeline that intentionally writes EXIF: camera make and model, exposure settings, sometimes a thumbnail, often GPS if location services were on. A screenshot is produced by copying pixels from the display (or a window) into a new image file. The writer is the OS or a snipping utility, not the camera ISP. So the “classic camera EXIF” people worry about is frequently missing — which is why many people assume screenshots are automatically clean.
What can still appear depends on platform and format. PNG captures often carry tEXt/iTXt-style textual chunks or an ICC profile. JPEG screenshots may include a slim EXIF or XMP block with DateTime, Software, or ImageDescription-like fields. Some pipelines embed DPI, color space, or orientation-related data. None of that requires inventing percentages; the practical point is qualitative: absence of GPS is common, absence of all metadata is not guaranteed.
Annotation changes the picture again. When you open a screenshot in Markup on iOS, a third-party snipping app, or a desktop editor and save arrows and redacted boxes, the saving app may write its own creator-tool string into the file. The visible redactions are pixels; the tool name is metadata. People who “black out” a password on screen but leave software tags intact are solving only half the problem — and if the sensitive text was never truly covered in pixels, metadata was never the main leak anyway.
Another confusion: screenshotting someone else’s photo from your screen does not mean you stripped their original. You created a new image of the display. The original file, if you still attach it later, keeps its EXIF. The screenshot is a separate object with its own (usually lighter) metadata footprint. How platforms typically behave
On iOS, the system screenshot gesture saves an image into Photos. Historically these captures are lighter on camera-style EXIF than a photo from Camera, but they still exist as real files with creation timing and format metadata. Editing with Markup and saving can add or alter accompanying tags depending on how the edit is written back. AirDropping or exporting the screenshot sends whatever the current file contains — not a magically empty container.
On Android, behavior varies by manufacturer skin and Android version. The default screenshot action generally produces a gallery item that is not a full camera EXIF clone of a Rear Camera shot. Vendor gallery apps and “smart capture” tools may add their own fingerprints. If you long-press, scribble, or run the capture through a manufacturer editor before sharing, check the exported file rather than assuming the first capture state survived.
On Windows, Snipping Tool and Snip & Sketch (and the newer combined Snipping Tool experiences) save PNG or JPEG captures that can include software-related metadata and standard image headers. Pasting into Paint and resaving can change which tags remain. The Windows Photos app may further rewrite metadata if you edit and export. On macOS, the Screenshot utility (Shift-Command-3/4/5) writes files — often PNG — to the desktop or a chosen folder. Those files can carry color profile information and capture-related metadata. Opening in Preview, marking up, and exporting may add Preview or Quartz-related software strings. App Store screenshot tools follow their own habits. Again: inspect the file you are about to attach.

Also verify visually that sensitive UI is actually covered in pixels: notification previews, map corners, email addresses in the status area, and desktop paths in window titles. Real scenarios
A support engineer attaches a PNG of an error dialog to a public GitHub issue. There is no GPS, so they assume nothing identifiable remains. The file still carries a creation timestamp and a software tag that reveals the capture utility. That may be harmless — or it may be more operational detail than they wanted next to a customer hostname already visible in the screenshot pixels.
A teacher shares a screenshot of a gradebook view in a parent email after blacking out other students’ names. The black boxes are fine; the file still has timing metadata. A marketplace seller screenshots a shipping label confirmation to prove a package mailed, then posts it in a dispute thread. Camera GPS was never in play, but device and software tags plus on-screen address text create a combined exposure. Clean metadata on the file and crop the label region that should stay private.
Someone tries to “remove EXIF from a vacation photo” by screenshotting it on a monitor and posting the capture. The new image may lack the original GPS, which feels like success, but the method is lossy, may still carry screenshot metadata, and leaves the original GPS-rich file sitting in their camera roll for the next accidental share. Prefer stripping the real photo when the photo is what you mean to send.
Common mistakes
Assuming “no camera EXIF” equals “no metadata.” Assuming every OS writes identical fields. Assuming markup apps are metadata-neutral. Assuming a chat app’s compression removed tags without checking. And assuming that because Instagram or another network strips some metadata on upload, your pre-upload copy in email or cloud drive is equally clean — those are different distribution paths.
Another mistake is using screenshot-as-strip for legal or workplace evidence workflows. If authenticity matters, creating a new raster of the screen changes what you can claim about the original file. Use a proper metadata tool on the original when you need a cleaned derivative, and keep policy in mind for evidence handling.
