What standalone cameras typically do include more consistently: detailed lens information, exact camera body serial number in some models, and precise exposure settings — fields a phone photo may include in a simpler form or not at all.

Phone files often carry richer personal context: GPS, sometimes altitude, network-adjacent fields depending on OS, and software strings from the camera app or computational-photography stack. DSLR and mirrorless files lean toward technical EXIF — focal length, lens model, shutter, aperture, ISO, white balance, and on many bodies a serial or internal ID. Neither profile is “safer” by default. A phone photo can dox a home address; a camera photo can dox a specific body that appears across years of a photographer’s published work.

How to review and strip camera vs. phone metadata

Check a camera photo’s metadata the same way as a phone photo — open it in the browser tool and review what is present before deciding what to strip. Do not assume a camera photo is automatically safer just because it likely lacks GPS data; check for a camera serial number if that model records one, since that field can be used to link multiple photos back to the same physical camera.

For phone files, prioritize GPS and any owner/artist fields the OS or editing apps added. For camera files, prioritize serial, lens identity if that is sensitive in your niche, and any GPS added by a receiver or phone pair. Strip what you do not need for the share, save a cleaned JPEG/PNG, and keep the unmarked original offline if you still need EXIF for your own catalog. When clients ask for “full EXIF for authenticity,” send a second intentionally unstripped archive under a clear label — do not reuse the public file for that request.

After stripping, spot-check: search the cleaned file’s properties for GPS, serial, and artist. If any remain, strip again before publishing.

Treating “no GPS” as equivalent to “no metadata” — cameras still record plenty of technical and sometimes device-identifying metadata even without location.
