Remove Metadata From a Photo Before Posting to Reddit

Reddit image posts in local and hobby subs travel farther than a group chat. City subreddits (the r/YourCity pattern), housing threads, car meets, restaurant plates, protest documentation, and “what is this building” stills are photographs of real places. If Location Services was on for Camera, the JPEG can carry a pin finer than the caption. If you posted from a throwaway, the account name is new; the phone that took the picture is not. Anyone who saves the image can read GPS, DateTimeOriginal, Make, and Model with a free viewer. That is a deanonymization path, not a theoretical one.

Why local subreddits make GPS worse than a meme sub

A picture of a meme template does not map a block. A picture of a pothole, a landlord’s hallway, a bar patio, or a “which intersection is this” puzzle does. Local subscribers already know the city. Coordinates turn “somewhere in town” into a street. Housing and roommate threads are sharper: a room photo taken in your unit can pin the building. Car and license-adjacent posts pin a driveway if you shot the car at home before you drove to the meet.

Image-heavy subs (photography, mechanical, cooking, fashion, “rate my setup”) train people to download originals. Some users inspect EXIF out of curiosity about cameras. That hobby skill is the same skill used to locate a poster. You do not need everyone in the sub to be hostile. You need one person who saves the file.

Crossposts and rehosts multiply copies. A cleaned Reddit preview does not clean the Imgur or gallery file you attached first, or the camera-roll original still on your phone. Strip before the first public attach. Archives and search will keep whatever left your device.

Throwaway accounts do not throw away the header

People make a new account for a sensitive post and then attach a phone JPEG with GPS still on. The username is anonymous. The file still says when and where the shutter fired and which handset wrote the tags. If you have ever posted another photo from the same phone with the same Make/Model — even on an old account — correlating device tags is a known amateur technique. A full wipe of the post copy is simpler than hoping nobody compares files.

IPTC author and copyright strings from a desktop export can print your real name or Lightroom identity into a supposedly anonymous JPEG. Check the panel before you strip so you know those fields were there. Then strip. Do not leave “copyright Jane Doe” in a throwaway housing rant.

Screenshots of photos are not a shortcut. The PNG can still carry Software and a capture clock. Wipe the screenshot too, or wipe the underlying photo and post that cleaned still.

What metadata a Reddit-bound phone photo typically still contains

GPS first — home, the street you photographed, the trailhead, the restaurant booth. Timestamps next — they can contradict a story or show a pattern of posts from the same evening. Device tags fingerprint the camera. MakerNotes and serial-adjacent fields sometimes survive in original camera files. None of that is required for subscribers to see the pixels.

How to strip a photo in MetadataWipe before you post to Reddit

1. Export the JPEG or PNG you will actually attach. Convert HEIC to JPEG if needed. Prefer the cropped version you plan to show, then wipe that export.

3. Strip locally. Typical EXIF, IPTC, and XMP are not copied into the new download. Your original stays on disk.

5. Attach only the cleaned file to the post. Do not pick the original from Recents because the thumbnail matches. If the post is a gallery, wipe every image, not only the cover.

Turning off location for Camera helps future shots. It does not clean the local-sub photo you already took in your kitchen.
