AirDrop feels private because it is peer-to-peer and short-range. Privacy of the radio path is not the same as privacy of the file contents. The JPEG or HEIC that leaves your Photos library still carries whatever EXIF it had — including GPS — unless something removed those tags first.

Direct transfer versus recompression pipelines

Social apps and many MMS paths re-encode images to hit size caps. That recompression often drops EXIF whether you asked or not. AirDrop’s job is faithful delivery of the selected representation. Faithful delivery preserves metadata. That is good for photographers sending masters to each other — and easy to misunderstand if you wanted a scrubbed share.

Apple’s share controls may offer removing location for a send. That targets GPS-related fields. It is not a promise that every camera, lens, timestamp, and proprietary tag is gone. What the receiver gets

On another iPhone or Mac, the incoming photo can show location in Info, appear on a map in Photos, and retain Make/Model. AirDrop did not “sanitize” it mid-flight. If you stripped locally first and verified, the receiver gets the clean file — until they sync an unclean original from elsewhere.

AirDrop is Apple-to-Apple

Nearby sharing on other ecosystems has the same conceptual split: some modes are near-literal file copies; some re-encode. Always ask whether the channel recompresses. AirDrop’s answer is usually “copy,” which is why metadata survives.

HEIC, Live Photos, and paired assets

Sending a Live Photo or HEIC can include related resources. A still you thought was scrubbed may travel with a video component or derivative that still carries tags. Prefer exporting a single cleaned still you inspected, then AirDrop that file — not the ambiguous library object with edits and live pairs attached.

If you must send HEIC, strip and verify HEIC-capable tooling, or convert to a verified clean JPEG after strip. Guessing that AirDrop “flattened” Live Photo metadata is unsafe.

Practical workflow
